JOSHUA TREE NEWS | COMMUNITY REPORT · 2026

In June 2026, Joshua Tree National Park announced a short but consequential holiday closure of Covington Flats, one of the park’s areas valued for its Joshua tree habitat. The July Fourth weekend restriction was preventive rather than an indication that a fire was already burning there.

The dates of the closure

The National Park Service announced June 23 that Covington Flats would close to public access Thursday, July 2 through Monday, July 6, with a planned reopening at 7 a.m. July 6. The announcement concerned the Covington Flats area specifically, not a closure of every Joshua Tree National Park entrance.

Why that area mattered

Park managers described Covington Flats as an important refuge for Joshua trees. Rainfall earlier in the year had supported grass growth, and those grasses later dried into combustible fine fuels. An unusually busy holiday period increases chances of a human ignition source reaching vulnerable vegetation.

The wildfire record behind the decision

In explaining its temporary action, the park stated that five wildfires during the preceding five years were all determined to have been human caused. A short restriction during a risky holiday can protect both natural resources and visitors, although local recreation businesses may see temporary changes in itineraries.

What to take away for future trips

This was a July 2026 event and should not be mistaken for a current October shutdown. Backcountry access depends on live park notices, weather and any new orders. People traveling from Joshua Tree should check the precise area, start and end dates rather than relying on headlines alone.
