JOSHUA TREE, San Bernardino County — October 27, 2026. Two public spaces serving Joshua Tree families are slated for substantial improvements after county supervisors approved a construction contract of approximately $3.1 million. The work is planned for Sunburst Park and Community Park, with construction anticipated between fall 2026 and spring 2027.

What is included?

According to San Bernardino County’s August 20 summary of Board of Supervisors actions taken August 18, the contract went to Three Peaks Corp. Improvements are expected to include new playground equipment, accessible walking paths, lighting, landscaping, an outdoor fitness area, an asphalt pump track, signs and facilities intended to reduce litter.

The county describes the project as focused on accessibility, improved safety, and opportunities for recreation. Each park’s exact construction limits, closure dates and final amenities must be confirmed through posted public-works updates or final drawings.

Where the money comes from

The construction project is supported by a Clean California Local Grant Program award of approximately $3.77 million. The county describes the $3.1 million construction contract as fully funded through that grant. The grant amount and the contract value are different financial figures and should not be conflated.

Why these parks matter

San Bernardino County’s County Service Area 20 oversees multiple Joshua Tree recreation facilities. Its park directory lists Sunburst Park at 6171 Sunburst Avenue, which includes community and sports amenities, and Community Park at 6617 Easterly Drive, which includes playground and preschool-related space. These public spaces are important for families who otherwise may need to travel to neighboring towns for some activities.

What residents should check during construction

The county projected a fall 2026 construction start and spring 2027 completion in its August statement. Such schedules can change because of procurement, weather or unexpected conditions. Visitors should verify whether a specific playground, parking area or path is temporarily closed before arriving; the grant announcement is not a real-time closure notice.
